The NRSV With Apocrypha!

The New Revised Standard Version is the translation preferred by mainline Protestant churches, Orthodox churches, and by many Catholics. The NRSV is recognized in many scholarly circles as the most accurate translation into English of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. In the tradition of its predecessors, the King James Version and the Revised Standard Version, the NRSV was designed to be the "standard" version for English–speaking people across all denominations, which in many ways it has become. Unlike some of the new, more sectarian translations, the NRSV maintains the highest standards of elegance and accuracy.

This edition NOW INCLUDES the Apocrypha, which is labeled "NRSVA" in your list of installed Bibles.

Runs on e-Sword PCAndroidX for Mac®HD for iPad®, and LT for iPhone®. These links show system requirements for using e-Sword software on your device. Recent versions of e-Sword are required in order to install and use e-Sword modules purchased from eStudySource.com.

A Much-Needed Addition (1/30/2024)
Reviewed by (Howard Rabb, BALL GROUND, Georgia, United States) - E-Sword has been instrumental in helping me through seminary. I have made extensive use of it, graduating with a baccalaureate in May 2023. Now in graduate school seeking a Master of Arts, I have NINE VERSIONS of God's Word on my E-Sword window. What a useful tool! Maybe I could still do this work without your creation, fellas, but it sure would be a lot harder. Concerning the NRSV with Apocrypha in particular, I wanted the version of the Bible commonly used in so-called mainline denominations, and I especially wanted a readily available set of the Apocrypha. Your tool in fact does the job even better, interspersing the apocryphal books in amongst the real Scripture, in the appropriate places within the canon. Again, well done, guys.

Solid Translation (4/18/2023)
Reviewed by (Thomas Friedrich, Loudon, NH, United States) - The NRSV is a solid English translation as far as formal equivalence translations go. Excellent effort at the Impossible (6/9/2022)
Reviewed by (Fred Barner, Rockingham, Virginia, US) - Excellent effort made for an impossible task- translating with integrity the original inspired word into the current language spoken by the One who inspires? Originally it was exclusively male. Today the Holy One includes in equal standing the female side of humanity. We do not even have a word "queendom," and even Israel has set aside the engagement and role of royalty. How do you translate Torah which means so much more than law? I wish the translators simply trusted their readers to learn the meaning of Torah, and transliterated instead. Navigating e-sword's version is simply wonderful. Thank you.

NRSV Product Review (3/18/2021)
Reviewed by (Susan Mills, Atlanta, GA, US) - My purchase of the NRSV which included the NRSV w/Apocrypha version also has been an excellent revised Bible version to add to the many versions I already have in e-Sword app. I do extensive intensive on-going Bible study and my first Bible was the RSV, which states it was translated from the original tongues, so the NRSV will be a close rendition. Being Protestant, I have not been exposed much to the Apocrypha, but this version gives me the opportunity to read it and research its history. I often think how Christ would view His Church dividing during the reformation and then the innumerable divisions within the denominations, etc. and when the dust settled the Apocrypha was deemed by the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and others as deuterocanonical books and the Protestant Chruch did not so deem it. As a believer, the Holy Spirit leads me into all truth (Jn 16). I will read the Apocrypha and pray for His guidance to truth. The NRSV is an excellent version of the Bible and this e-Sword Pruduct is for both Protestants and Catholics.

My personal favorite version. (8/15/2020)
Reviewed by (Dan Juroff, WAUKEGAN, Illinois, United States) - Everyone has a favorite version of the Bible, I guess. I tend to prefer versions that are based on original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts, which the NRSV is. Although more clearly worded in contemporary language, the NRSV still retains some of the more elegant style of the KJV. Certainly worth the purchase to have this version available at my fingertips in e-Sword!

Three Versions (8/15/2020)
Reviewed by (Ed Simonds, Union, KY, US) - I now have three e-Sword versions of the NRSV - NRSV, NRSVA, and NRSV-CE. Not being Roman Catholic, I didn't know that the Catholic Edition didn't have the full apocrypha until after I bought the CE version. eSS customer service straightened out that misunderstanding of mine, so I subsequently bought the NRSVA version that has all the apocrypha, which is what I wanted to read and study. So far all of the eSS materials I have purchased have been first rate and their customer service is very responsive.

NRSV (5/14/2020)
Reviewed by (hal nonyur, Norman, OK, US) - I went full-on liberal and bought the NRSV. While I am distrustful of it for using plural pronouns (they) often turning a single addressed person into a group which can be misleading in some cases changing the meaning of the text - even though perhaps subtly - just to avoid a male pronoun. Seems needlessly confusing and overbearing in places. In places where the Greek means people... no problem with a change away from the inclusive use of man, for me. Just don't change the text to something that makes less sense than the inclusive language so many don't seem to understand anymore. That said. I prefer some of the NRSV readings to others in various passages. Personally, I wouldn't be bothered by a new pronoun to indicate both genders where that is the meaning, in order to avoid the awful, singular "they" debacle. I suggest "sHe" (but with the upper-case H the same height as the lower-case s and e). That would probably bother more people than the singular they, though. But not me. I can take it.

Otherwise, they are the exact same. I would have given this deal 5 stars, but one thing, there are no footnotes in any of the modules. This is unfortunate, because I have the NRSV hard copy and the footnotes is invaluable, explaining alternate readings and sometimes why the committee translated something the way they did. A Necessary Evil (4/2/2013)
Reviewed by (Mark Beadle, Perth, Western Australia, Australia) - Although I grew up with the RSV I have never been impressed with the NRSV. It replaces the title "Son of Man" in the OT with "human being" or "mortal" even in the prophetic passages that foreshadow Jesus' use of the title. For the sake of political correctness it uses the coined word "humankind" rather than the more natural "humanity" or even "humans". Additions to the text (e.g. 1 Samuel 10:27), while of interest, are not clearly marked as apocryphal and even less so in eSword which needs some mechanism to highlight such insertions. If you can show the words of Christ in red why not green for text which is (or should be) relegated to the footnotes? This would be useful in other versions (e.g. for 1 John 5:7). Still I needed a copy for my studies as it is much easier to copy and paste into an assignment than to type it all in.

Reviewed by (Don Weingarten, El Cerrito, California, US) - Excellent product. I'm a bit new to it, however, as far as I can tell it lives up to the high standards which I have come to associate E-Sword. The Apocrypha covered in the version which I ordered are fascinating and I would personally request the future provision of as many apocryphal works as can be found, as well as some work on the Dead Sea Scrolls. I also congratulate you on the latest E-Sword program, which includes an excellent interface. Thank you and congratulations on a fine product.

I use it for school and also for personal study. It is pretty faithful to the original texts. The only shortfall with the E-Sword version at this point is that it does not have the excellent NRSV translator's footnotes with it which often explains why and how the translators varied with or clarified the meaning of the original texts. I still have to resort to my paper copy for that information. Hopefully, they will be included at some point on E-Sword.
