The Defender's Study Bible Notes from Dr. Henry Morris -- Now for e-Sword!
NOTE: This is a Commentary resource, with 21 additional appendices under Reference Books.
This acclaimed resource provides a solid defense of the accuracy, integrity, and inspiration of the Bible, a seven-day creation, and Jesus as God's incarnate Son. Now every Bible student can understand and defend the critical issues of their faith. It is full of insights and facts that every believer needs know. Written in a style that is easy to understand and read, it includes great study helps for archaeology, reference, and life application. Dr. Morris's views on the validity of literal Bible interpretation and the infallibility of the Bible are represented eloquently throughout the more than 6000 annotations. He strives to explain difficult passages in a clear and concise manner. He refuses to compromise in order to maintain the authority of true biblical Christianity and doctrine, and applies what the Bible says to modern life.
One of the greatest aspects of this study Bible is its clear views on controversial matters. Where other study Bibles and other commentators will take a neutral stance, Morris clearly presents what he believes to be the truth--what the biblical authors meant. Then he tactfully and thoroughly defends his beliefs while presenting and disproving those of others.
"The Bible does have the answer; its gospel can be defended; and it is hoped that this Defender's Study Bible will prove of significant help in this great cause to those who use it. Its annotations explain the Bible's difficult passages, resolve its alleged contradictions, point out the evidences of its divine origin, confirm its historical accuracy, note its remarkable anticipations of modern science, demonstrate its fulfilled prophecies and in general remove any doubts about its inerrancy, its authority and its ability to meet every human need."—Dr. Henry M. This commentary is written from a conservative, young-earth perspective, to which I subscribe. The writer takes a literal approach to Bible interpretation, from which many commentaries and churches are moving away. With the literal approach comes a broad perspective, so Morris includes topics from science, archaeology, eschatology and history or customs of the era. The notes are short and concise, making study easy. It is well formatted and conforms well to the e-Sword commentary divisions of book, chapter and verse. I highly recommend this it.
Concerning e-Sword I have much to say, but will try to keep it brief. As far as ease of use, breadth of support, available resources and cost effectiveness, e-Sword is unsurpassed in my opinion. I use it every day for my own personal devotions and study. I also use it for presentations during online Bible study and for quick reference during teaching. I am talking about e-Sword for Mac & iOS.
The e-Sword application has one major flaw on iOS & Mac. I have managed a work-around on Windows, but I hardly use the Windows platform anymore. This flaw is that there is no automatic synchronization between devices. This feature would help me tremendously in my personal study and outreach. To keep notes, tags, comments and highlights current between all Apple devices, one has to use Airdrop, which is not a synchronization technology.
Because of frustration with this, I just went thorough a trial of the most popular Bible study softwares (except for Logos, which is overkill and too expensive) and then came back to e-Sword. On the iPad, e-Sword is the best Bible study software, in my opinion. The Mac version interface lags behind although the same features are there. The iPhone version is good, but a couple of minor features are missing.
With this shortcoming I still recommend e-Sword, although if you plan to use multiple devices, I would recommend to start with Olive Tree before you add too many annotations and reach the point of no exit. Once you add many of your own annotations to one software it becomes too hard to switch.
